WTA world number one Naomi Osaka reached the third round of the on-going US Open on Thursday, defeating Poland’s Magda Linette 6-2, 6-4.
The defending champion, also the reigning Australian Open champion, will next face either, 112th-ranked Hungarian qualifier Timea Babos or US 15-year-old Coco Gauff, the world number 140.
Linette broke the reigning champion in the second game of the second set and was 3-0 ahead before the Japanese rallied to capture six of the last seven games and finished the match in 71 minutes.
Osaka thanked the crowd for their supports “You guys were really nice to me. It gives me a lot of energy and makes it so much more fun,” she said.
