Manchester City begin League Cup defence at Preston as Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool get easy draw

Manchester City’s defence of their English League Cup title will start with a third-round visit to Preston in September. The draw also placed Man United against Rochdale and Liverpool against MK Dons.
Championship side Preston will aim to end City’s bid for another straight domestic treble when they welcome the League Cup winner to Deepdale.
Preston thrashed 2013 runners-up Bradford 4-0 in the second round on Tuesday to progress. However, they will have to prove their strength when they face a Manchester City team that scored 27 goals in six games against lower-league teams last season.
Premier League table leaders Liverpool were beaten by Chelsea in the third round last season but will be expected to find life more comfortable at League One outfit MK Dons.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have won the competition for a record eight-time.
In other draws, there will be a first south-coast derby since April 2012 between bitter rivals Southampton and Portsmouth.
Third-division Portsmouth will host Southampton at Fratton Park following Wednesday’s 2-0 win at QPR.
Manchester United will take on near-neighbors Rochdale at Old Trafford.
Last season’s runners-up Chelsea host either Macclesfield or Grimsby, whose game was abandoned on Tuesday because of heavy rain.
Arsenal will host Nottingham Forest to the Emirates Stadium and Tottenham visit Colchester.
The ties will be played during the week beginning 23 September.
